Up Against It
11/19/89 ~ New York
Roger Bart, Phillip Casnoff, Alison Frasier, Toni DiBuono, Dan Tubb Music by Todd Rundgren. Book by Joe Orton. Produced by Joseph Papp for The Public theatre.
Originally meant as a screenplay for The Beatles, which if produced would have been their third film (following "A Hard Day's Night" and "Help"). Following the screenplay, the story chronicles the misadventures of three prodigal friends (Orton had eliminated the George Harrison role after the Beatles turned down the script) who are victimized in a flagrant battle between the sexes. They become involved in a plot to assassinate the first female Prime Minister of Britain. Generally panned by the critics, the show closed after just 16 performances. Because it was filmed in a small Off-Broadway theatre, there are heads in the bottom of the frame, but not too bad

The show is very clever and funny, and the music is great, but it’s a bit clunky in places so there are sure to be changes before it does another run. This is very nicely captured with no major blackouts and just a couple quick dropouts and no obstruction. There is a bit of washout in some high contrast scenes. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. The sound is excellent. Includes curtain call and playbill scans. 2 DISCS

Tony: Louis Maskell, Maria: Katie Hall, Anita: Sinead Kenny, Bernardo: Javier Cid, Rif: Jack Wilcox, Doc: David Delve. I don't think I have enough words to explain how much I have enjoyed this production. It is a brilliant huge production with a flawless cast. The dancing is just breath-taking and I honestly don't know how cast members keep their energy up the whole time. There is something about this show, that everyone can enjoy. Telling the story of two lovers from rival street gangs, West Side Story crams a hectic storyline into the performance, which admittedly hooks the audience from start to finish. I don't think it would be fair to point out at any particular performer since the cast were fantastic, but the four leads really stole the show. Its a beautiful HD capture in 16:9 wide-screen with no obstructions and action well followed. This is a highly recommended show for all collectors.

Fisher, Britton White One of the lightest, brightest and gayest revues to grace Off-Broadway in the mid-1990s, taking home top awards in the process, is here presented by the Lyric Stage Company of Boston. Conceived by Howard Crabtree and Mark Waldrop with jubilant songs by lyricist Waldrop and wonderful composer, the late Dick Gallagher. Crabtree died on June 28, 1996, just before the show opened. Waldrop noted "It's a show...inspired by costumes--and, just by extension, the exuberance of Howard's spirit and his desire to just put it out there." The concept of the revue is that "Howard" stages a musical. All of the characters in the revue are played by men.

Donna Vivino (st/by), Alli Mauzey, Kyle Dean Massey, Randy Danson, Adam Grupper, Catherine Chalebois, F. Michael Haynie. The video is shot from the last row of the stalls, with medium head obstruction, which is a shame, as you get a nice vibe of the full stage (though it is nothing like seeing it live). When not zoomed in, there is tad spotlight washout. After For Good the person sitting next to the master picks up a cup and just shoves it by the camera, so that is a real pain. Planned to be Jackie Burns's final performance, but due to vocal issues her stand-by Donna went on. Clear shot. 2 DISCS

There is an interesting blooper when Shanon misses her entrance for One Short Day. Emma and the ensemble perform as usual with Shanon singing her first few lines from off stage until she enters at “I think we’ve found the place where we belong”. A fantastic capture of the show with no obstruction, no washout and only one short blackout during the “Thrillifying News” section. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups.

Clear shot. 2 DISCS

1991 ~ Los Angeles, CA, Revival
Kristin Chenoweth, Donna McKechnie, David Garrison, Harry Groener A madcap farce of pre-Depression dandies and mistaken identities, highlight Cole Porter's 1929 musical You Never Know. Cole Porter has often referred to You Never Know as his worst show, and the show had a very short run of just 78 performances at the Winter Garden Theatre. Presented at the Pasadena Playhouse. Nicely filmed for the most part, but occasional "sta ge searching" where nothing is being filmed but the ceiling. Still, a surprisingly nice video for it's age.
